The Jacksonville Armada FC defeated The Villages SC of the PDL in the Play-In Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Sunday night.

The 2-1 victory came at Jacksonville University’s Southern Oak Stadium and allows the Armada FC to advance on to the First Round. SIMA Aguiles will host Jacksonville Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Monteverde, Fla.

Jacksonville put away the first goal of the night and went on the board early in the match.

A sequence between Derek Gebhard and Yuma set up Michael Melvin for a cross. The cross went into the box where Ciarán Kilduff was waiting to head it in. He became the first scorer of the 105th U.S. Open Cup, just five minutes into the match.

Although the Armada FC kept the majority of the possession, the home team was not able to double the lead before the halftime whistle.

The Villages SC equalized int he 58th minute. Leonardo Paiva set up Gabriel Torres and he laid one into the net from in front of the box.

Paisa then almost had a goal of his own in the 64th minute, but the Villages was called offsides.

The winning goal came in the 71st minute.

Kilduff won a free kick 25 yards out, and it was taken by Mechack Jérôme. His shot met the Villages' defense, but he got to it again and sent it into the box where Wesley Charpie tapped it in.
