RECAP | Late Penalty Allows Edmonton to Defeat Armada in Alberta

EDMONTON — In the final and furthest road trip that the Jacksonville Armada FC (4-8-9, 20 Fall; 5-12-14, 27 Combined) would make this year, a late penalty would allow Edmonton to defeat the fleet 1-0 in the dying minute of stoppage time.

With anticipation of the final whistle looming throughout Clarke Stadium, Armada defender Mechack Jérôme was whistled for a trip on Edmonton’s Sainey Nyassi on the edge of the 18-yard box. At first glance the officials awarded a free kick to the Eddies.

However, only moments later, despite a contesting Armada, the call was over-turned and a penalty kick was awarded to Edmonton. Daryl Fordyce stepped up and put the game winner past Gallardo to give the Eddies only their second win over the Armada all-time in six meetings.

While the wear of four games in 12 days may have been beginning to show, the Armada’s tired legs were not going to give up that easily. For 90 minutes the Armada did not back down from a barrage of Edmonton scoring opportunities.

Both sides traded scoring attempts early on. Edmonton, who had already qualified for a postseason spot, appeared to edge the Armada out firing 16 shots to the Armada’s three over the course of the match. However, Jacksonville proved to be relentless, winning the ball back constantly and overtaking the Eddies in possession by 53.4%.

The Armada dodged an early bullet in the 25th minute when Edmonton’s Tomi Ameobi slotted a pass to Dustin Corea who failed to tap in an open net opportunity sending the ball well high over the net.

Jacksonville was not without its chances. Zach Steinberger and Charles Eloundou continued to penetrate the Eddies backline. A combination from the two in the 24th minute ended at Jemal Johnson’s feet who was not able to squeeze it past Matt VanOekel keeping the goalkeeper on his toes.
